Project 2 Proposal
This research proposal is written by Kirliffa Hamilton. The narrative that was chosen to be analyzed is the movie the Black Panther. The research question that was selected is: Is our depiction of Africa distorted due to social media sites and our own parents?
The Black Panther film is in the fantasy/science fiction category. It can be bought on many movie streaming applications such as Amazon movies, ITunes, Television, and many more. This narrative is engaging because the story focuses on the T’Challa, one the rightful heirs to the throne of the country of Wakanda, located in Africa. The nation is secluded from the world but is one of the most technologically advanced in the world. The films opens up with the return of the T’Challa and then focuses on his crowning as king ceremony. This film is very engaging especially with the fact that outsiders of the country are completely oblivious to the fact that Wakanda is a technological superpower. Which is definitely is shown when Ross, a detective, has been injured and is healed very quickly with vibranium, and is surprised by the fact the country is so advanced that it can heal injuries that heal in a much longer time span if done in any other country. Some of the themes of this film is challenging power structure, African diaspora, the west’s views of Africa, and tradition vs change. These can be seen easily throughout the film.
Kirliffa’s major is interdisciplinary medical sciences. Although that is her main field or study, books are a passion of hers. This film also connects with Hamilton Inc., Kirliffa’s student brand. Her industry focuses one building one’s love for books and this include books that have become films. The movie is fiction but it branches out from the previous works that she has written about.
This question was chosen this research question because it is better to do more research on topics rather than just believing what parents or social media has to say about it. I have already learned that the American and European views of political instability in Africa reflect judgement that continue to be based on their own values, traditions, and imperial patterns of thought that continue to take little account of the history of modern day independent Africa. The prejudice of Africa is still deeply embedded into the world’s views of the country. There are some that are asking these questions because of so many parents and schools not teaching students about Africa more in-depth.
This projects focus on technological advancement and the views of the country of Africa. The differences between how ones views can be opened up if they learn more about a topic. We currently see Africa as a very poor country that has many starving children. Although this may be true in some cases, it isn’t the full truth of Africa. In our minds we see commercials about the country and are constantly fed from a young age that Africa is poor and has always been poor.
